The most famous and only fully authenticated image –to date- of the Kid is believed to have been taken at Fort Sumner toward the end of 1879 or the beginning of 1880. This is an early tintype that required the poseur to stay still during the long exposure time; hence the stand holding Billy’s head on the backside. These early cameras produced reversed images, which led to the wrong belief that the Kid was left handed; what he really wasn’t. Once the session finished he kept the four photos in his pocket and perhaps gifted his girlfriend Paulita Maxwell with one of them before riding away...
