Dr. Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen for civilian use under the “people’s car” project, but the German army was also interested in the design for military use. The resulting Kübelwagen was a canvas-top convertible with a lightweight monocoque body. Equipped with a reliable air-cooled 985cc 4-cylinder engine, the vehicle had excellent cross-country performance. It was used on all fronts by the German army and the Luftwaffe in roles such as liaison, reconnaissance, and personnel transportation.
