Designed by Willy Messerscmitt, the Me109 was a hugely successful fighter built by Germany. With 30,573 units manufactured, it was produced in higher quantities than any other fighter in history. Indeed, the Me 109 alone accounted for 47% of all German WWII aircraft production! A number of variants were produced over the course of its lifetime, and the availability of the 1475hp Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine gave rise to the G-series. In this Gustav series, the G2 was the first production variant that began appearing in 1942.
And now, Dragons mouthwatering Warbirds series welcomes a newcomer to its ranks. Its an Me109G-2 Trop of III./JG 77, the Trop signifying it was designed to operate in the extreme heat of North Africa or the Mediterranean. Jagdgeschwader 77 Herz As (Ace of Hearts) served in every front at some stage of WWII, but III./JG 77 arrived in North Africa in October 1942. The wing saw extensive combat against the Desert Air Force, and many aces added to their impressive tallies, with a total of 333 aerial victories recorded. The aircraft model itself is superbly produced and finished, painted in a desert camouflage scheme. To make this model unique, the Me109G-2 comes mounted on a compass platform, a special piece of equipment designed to raise the tail of an aircraft to allow it to test its guns on the ground. The diorama base with this special ramp and realistic looking desert landscape makes this a truly inspirational piece to have in any aircraft collection!
