This weeks offering comes from Charles Biggs Premier Collection. Mr. Biggs was a long-time sculptor /designer with the William Britains company (he started in 1956). In the 1990s developed his own line of glossy World War I soldiers under the Premier banner, these figures being entirely made in England. Retaining the name Premier, he struck out on his own and continued to create some fascinating figures, like this set: #9908, Hospital Wheelchair Set. It depicts a shell-shocked soldier in wheelchair attended by a sympathetic doctor and nurse with a handful of feel-good medicine. The patients 1,000-yard stare is spot on and truly disconcerting. Biggs went back to work for Britains with his Premier line but the figures were now to be made in China and the series eventually petered out making his early, English work that much more desirable.
