World War I
Mons 1914 Series
From 1891 to 1906 Count Alfred von Schlieffen, Chief of the German General Staff, drew up a plan to invade France through Belgium. By August 1914 the plan had been considerably changed but was nevertheless put into place by the German high command. One of the changes stipulated that the German thrust through Belgium would not brush the channel as originally planned but instead would hit further inland, bringing the German First Army to Mons. The German offensive began on August 4, 1914 with the first of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) arriving in Mons on August 21, 1914. They set up defensive positions along the Mons-Conde Canal with concentrations of troops around the bridges. On August 23 the Germans advanced in force on Mons with the British providing stiff resistance. By nightfall of the 23rd the British were forced to pull back from the canal and begin a stubborn week long retreat back through France. |
