Japan was in turmoil in the mid 19th Century with the Shogun and Imperialists struggling for power and anti-American protests. Shogun established Shinsengumi as the Guardians of the capitol Kyoto. Shinsengumi was eventually destroyed by the Imperialist new modern army. Note, these are historical figures, not Hollywood’s version.
