Yorktown, Redoubt #10
Yorktown - October, 1781. In May 1781, General George Washington and French General Comte de Rochambeau met in Connecticut to decide the coming campaign against the British. Initially they made plans to move against General Clinton in New York, but when General Cornwallis, operating in the South, moved into Yorktown, Virginia, to re-supply, they saw their chance. Cornwallis needed supplies from the British Navy and if the French fleet could blockade and defeat the British re-supply effort from the sea, then Washington and Rochambeau could lay siege to Yorktown and defeat Cornwallis and his 7,000 man army.

On August 21, 1781, the French Admiral, de Grasse, defeated the Royal Navy fleet under Admiral Graves and won control of the Chesapeake Bay. Cornwallis was trapped. On September 28th, the American and French troops arrived at Yorktown and proceeded to lay siege to the town. By October 14, 1781 the last outlying British defenses, Redoubt’s 9 and 10 were taken in a daring night time raid by the French infantry and American Light Infantry. Cornwallis surrendered on October 1, 1781, and Great Britain sued for peace soon thereafter.
