Knights of Agincourt, October 25, 1415
Henry V, King of England, and, according to him, of France, invaded France on August 12, 1415 to claim by force his French Kingdom. By October, his army (referred to as a host in medieval times) reduced through sickness and disease to only 5,000 archers and 1,000 men-at-arms, Henry decided to make his way back to Calais and then on to England. The main French army of 20,000-30,000 finally caught up with Henry and blocked his retreat to Calais at Agincourt on October 25. The day dawned cold and wet with the French knights eager to ride over Henry's puny little force. The French charged prematurely and discovered that the narrow, wet field turned into a muddy, perfect killing ground for the experience English longbowmen. By the end of the day, the flower of French nobility lay dead or captured on the field. Between 7,000-10,000 French perished against only 500 English. It was an incredible English victory that would go down in the annals of warfare.
